5 Creative Ideas for Ginger Cat Appreciation Day

Do you know who doesn’t get enough appreciation? Cats! Black cats, white cats, round cats, long cats, short cats, and little cats with scruffy fur and pink wet noses – they all deserve all our love, all the time.

But unfortunately, that might just be too much love to fit into a single day. So, for now, let’s celebrate one type of cat in particular: it’s Ginger Cat Appreciation Day!

Here are 5 creative ways to honor our orange-hued, fiery-furred, and marmalade-toned friends.

When Is Ginger Cat Appreciation Day?

Ginger Cat Appreciation Day falls on the 1st of September every year. That’s right, none of this ‘second Tuesday after the last summer full moon nonsense – just a simple, straightforward date to keep in the calendar. No excuses for missing it!

And What Is Ginger Cat Appreciation Day?

As the name subtly hints at, Ginger Cat Appreciation Day is a special time all about recognizing everything that makes ginger cats so lovable.

The day was originally founded in memory of one beloved ginger cat in particular, named Doobert, who was adopted as a stray kitten by a software engineer called Roy. After Doobert passed away in 2014 at the ripe old age of 17, Roy decided that nothing short of a national day to celebrate ginger cats was in order, and so Ginger Cat Appreciation Day was born!

These days, it’s our chance to show a little love to our ginger kitties and honor their unique place in both the feline world and our very own homes. Fancy some tips on how to go about just that? Here are a few ideas:

1. Learn Some Fun Facts About Ginger Cats

Start your ginger cat appreciation by learning more about what makes these cats so special. For example, did you know that up to 80% of ginger cats are male thanks to the dominant “ginger gene” found on the X chromosome? Or that their coat patterns are always a type of tabby, even if they look like a solid color from a distance?

Or how about this for a groundbreaking discovery: two teams of scientists at Kyushu University in Japan and Stanford University in the US have recently revealed exactly why ginger cats are ginger! After years of mystery, it turns out that ginger cats are missing a section of their genetic code. This means that the cells responsible for their skin, eye, and fur tone produce lighter colors, resulting in their beautiful orange hue.

There’s so much to discover about our golden-toned friends, so why stop there? Check out our previous blog exploring exactly what makes ginger cats so special.

2. Throw a Ginger Cat-Themed Party

No one should need an excuse to party, but in case you need to justify yourself to the neighbors, just tell them it’s Ginger Cat Day!

Invite fellow cat lovers round and celebrate with ginger cat-themed decorations, paw print bunting, and cat-shaped cookies for your human guests (bonus points for orange icing sugar). During the celebration, make sure there are plenty of cosy hiding spots and vertical spaces for kitties, so they can join in the fun at their own pace and without any undue stress or anxiety.

You could even set up a mini photo booth with props to capture adorable snaps of your ginger cat – and don’t forget to share them using the #gingercatappreciationday hashtag.

3. Get Creative with Ginger Cat Art

Whether you’re into drawing, painting, or crafting, why not create a tribute to your favorite feline in art form? From crocheting a cat plushie to sketching your kitty’s unique coat pattern, there are endless ways to express your ginger cat appreciation through creativity.

You could even give the cat loaf pose a whole new meaning by baking a literal loaf of bread that looks like a cat. We’re not bakers, so we’re not sure how you’d go about it, but the golden hue of a freshly baked loaf does seem ideally suited to a ginger cat – right?!

Okay, maybe that’s too ambitious – perhaps stick to creating gift cards for your fellow cat enthusiasts.

4. Treat Your Ginger Cat to Something Special

No one deserves to feel the love on Ginger Cat Appreciation Day more than your actual cat – ginger or otherwise! DIY cat treats and toys are a great place to start.

Whatever your kitty enjoys most – playing with a new toy, grooming time, or snuggling up for a nap – today is all about them.

5. Create a Happy Home for Your Ginger Cat

A loving home is the best gift you can give your cat, and Ginger Cat Appreciation Day 2025 is a great reminder to make sure their environment is calm, secure, and enriched. This can include providing more vertical space, cozy napping spots, or adding scratching posts and puzzle feeders – whatever makes your kitty happiest!

Of course, Ginger Cat Day is a great place to do something a little extra special, but the main thing is enjoying your unique bond together as much as you can. Whether you’re playing together or simply sharing some cuddles, make sure your cat feels the love.
